Appeal for Funds. A town meeting in Pomfret on January 23, 2008 approved the expenditure of $75,000 to the Wyndam Land Trust to be used toward their purchase of teh Buttner Preserve--approximately 53 acres of land adjacent to the southwest corner of the Duck Marsh Preserve. The land trust has acquired $225,000 from the State of Connecticut for this project, but we are still $5900 short of our goal. The Buttner Preserve is the jewel in the crown of all our preserves. Please consider making a donation to help us expand the protected property in this threatened habitat.
Open Space Bond. The same town meeting in approved the floating of a $4 million bond to be used to purchase open space in Pomfret. The availability of funds will allow Pomfret to react fast when land threatened by development becomes available for purchase.
Hauser Preserve in Woodstock. One of our lates acquisitions is the Hauser Preserve north of Taylor Road in Woodstock. The preserve was created from a conservation subdivision project. One half of the 55-acre property is to be used for 14 houses on lots ranging between 0.75 and 2.28 acres, and the other half has been set aside as open space and donated to the land trust. For a regular subdivision, the minimum lot size would have been 2.5 acres. "Smart growth" projects like this may represent the future of development in our region.
